The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Washington D.C. office has issued an Instruction Memorandum, which directs the BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. These are wild horses who once roamed free at little cost to the public.
We are vigorously working to help stop this mass extermination, and dangerous and violent expulsion of America’s wild equines from their homes in the wild. We need your support to help protect America's wild horses and burros from this atrocity.
Saving America’s Horses applauds and fully supports the recent open letter to the public by Humane Advocate, BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board, Ginger Kathrens, dated July 20, 2018. In her brave and bold open letter, Kathrens stated, "It doesn't take a brain surgeon to diagnose the outcome for these helpless wild horses who have lost freedom and family and will now make the ultimate sacrifice. They will end up dying a horrific death in Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses." Kathrens is also one of the experts/ leading cast members in the film, Saving America's Horses, and she is the Director of The Cloud Foundation. As a member of the BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board, Kathrens has firsthand knowledge and direct insight into the activities of the BLM. As additionally pointed out by Kathrens, “despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. All BLM public holding facilities must comply, whether they like it or not."
Strong federal protection is needed for these animals through a permanent federal protection and bans against the killing and against slaughter in the U.S. in order to put an end to their exportation from the U.S. for slaughter in foreign countries.
With your support through GlobalGiving, we have bolstered the reach and impact of Saving America’s Horses, the film and educational platform, through theatrical release and festival screenings. We have additionally released a variety of multi-media tools including educational reports, PSA’s, Video Alerts, white papers, brochures and info-graphics, but more must be done to expand the reach of this vital information.
We are reaching out to animal lovers and horse enthusiasts worldwide to help spread the word about the vital need to save and protect America's Horses from unspeakable suffering, malicious harm, and gruesome death. You can help by sharing this information through our page on the GlobalGiving platform. Your support in sharing this important cause will undoubtedly help us to come closer to our goal.
Through an ongoing nationwide collaborative alliance, the Saving America’s Horses Initiative and its members, comprised of numerous equine welfare organizations, environmentalists, animal rights groups, we have stepped up efforts to compel the change that’s needed once and for all.
Saving America’s Horses, the documentary film and multimedia educational project spotlights urgent global environmental and humanitarian crises. This powerful educational social action tool and feature film contrasts shots of noble, beautiful, galloping animals with well-researched, shocking statistics and brings to surface a searing indictment of special interests and governmental agencies involved in the predatory exploits of America's horses.
Excerpts from the film provide compelling sound bites for public awareness alerts and public announcements which through social outreach and grassroots networking, reach millions of people whose voices make a difference and save lives before it's too late.
Issue Background:
In April, 2018, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released a report to Congress proposing the mass killing of healthy wild horses and burros, as well as unrestricted sales and transfers abroad for slaughter as part of their inhumane, unsustainable and unacceptable management scheme for America’s treasured wild horses and burros. Unless America's equines are protected, the future for our beloved and majestic horses and burros will continue to be in jeopardy.
In the absence of federal protection, countless wild and domestic horses and burros are shipped across federal borders to slaughterhouses each year. Wild horses and burros are rapidly diminishing in the wild and there is no guarantee of humane treatment for any equines in America once they are labeled for slaughter. Special interests are aggressively targeting American tax dollars to re-open horse slaughter in the U.S. The public health risks are many; the health and environmental impacts are grave. The public has been duped and we believe the public deserves to know the truth.
Last year (2017) in the month of May, the United States, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released their 2018 “BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS” with a call for approval of proposed provisions that if passed would strip protections and effectively allow the BLM to shoot and kill wild horses and burros and sell wild horses and burros for slaughter. Thankfully those proposed budgetary provisions were not approved, but as reflected in the BLM’s most recent report, the BLM is at it again.
