Challenge

Recent statistics show that 70% of children in the villages of Pai district in Mae Hong Son who are mainly tribal have at least been exposed to some kind of substance abuse. The targeted area is a tourist spot that the illegal drug use is prevalent. Therefore, it has become known to most people as a red-zone area.Their tribal parents tend to leave their kids without proper parental care and guidance. As a result the children are influenced and pressured by peers to try drugs.

Solution

We provide 52-week life skills training as well as extra-curricular program on Saturdays for the targeted children so they can have good peers and become role models to other kids in the community. We also promote biblical values and train the children in language, academic and life skills. The children will have the opportunity to do community services through the Light Shine Center. The children camp will train kids how to say no to drugs and provide leadership and problem solving training.

Long-Term Impact

The children graduating from this program have good academic and performance. 80% of parents trained in parental training to look after their children. The parents are more involved and aware of the impact on their community. The monthly parental meetings help build trust among the parents who are or were drug abusers before. The strong network of parents can become a strong safety net for the children in community. We will see the kids breaking drug abusive cycle to be safe and sucessful.
