The Road Less Driven, a Motivational Story

By Rodney Lomax | Save Up Coordinator

John Ruskin said that, “Endurance is nobler that strength, and patience than beauty.” Niquita has had to develop both noble qualities in achieving her goals as a participant in RISE’s Save Up program. Niquita learned about the Save Up program when representatives from RISE came to speak at her place of employment. Niquita needed life changes and she knew she had to learn more about how to manage her money to create a stable and joyful environment for her family.

Niquita’s had one main goal: to save up enough funds to buy an automobile. The stress of having to find rides not only to work, but also to transport her daughter to school wore greatly on her. She found herself on the brink of unemployment because the lack of continuous reliable transportation assistance sometimes caused her to be late. This burden pushed her to the point where on several occasions she considered using the money she was saving to get a car before she completed the program. It was the encouraging words of her grandmother and the RISE staff that enabled her to persevere and graduate from the Save Up program.

Niquita purchased her automobile in March of 2017 and now she arrives at her place of employment each day happy and on time. She also enjoys that she doesn’t have the worry about her daughter being late to school and dealing with the consequences of the truancy system.

Niquita says that she now lives a more complete life. She can take her kids to the park on a whim and spend the day having a picnic or swimming without the constraints of arranging transportation.

Endurance and patience are truly character traits that can lead to ultimate success. Niquita is a testament to that. She says that future RISERs should find strength in the fact that she and others like her have been successful in graduating the program and purchasing assets. “It’s all worth it”, says Niquita. Her joyous disposition tells me that is indeed true.

Thank you for your contributions! Please help RISE continue to make goals attainable for our program participants. We will continue to uphold our mission of aiding people to self-sufficiency.
