Japan's whale hunt ends more than 70% below their self-allocated quota

The Japanese Fisheries Agency has announced that Japan hunted and killed 266 minke whales and 1 fin whale in the Southern Ocean, missing their self-allocated quota by over two thirds. The self-allocated quota is for 935 minke whales and 60 fin whales. News of the withdrawal of the Japanese Fleets came 4 days after a conflict between anti-whaling activists and Japanese whaling vessels.

Norway announces new 2012 whaling quota of 1286 minke whales

The Norwegian minister for Fisheries and Coastal Affairs announced in February that the country plans to hunt 1,286 minke whales in 2012, despite lack of public demand for whale meat and falling profits. In addition, the Norwegian government has lifted the zone restrictions by merging two previously separated areas to make it easier for the whalers to fulfill their quotas.

Icelandic announces new 2012 whaling quota of 216 minke whales

The Icelandic whaling season will begin this month with a quota of 216 minke whales and as of now, no fin whales are planned to be hunted this season. This is due to the US and President Obama certiying Iceland under the Pelly Amendment for hunting endangered species. Currently minke whales are not listed as endangered but fin whales are.
