Since 2004, our program has prioritized the Protection, Enhancement, and promotion of connectivity among vital areas for Jaguars and their prey within the Yucatan Peninsula. Our efforts have centered around advocating for various strategies aimed at safeguarding jaguar habitats, including the establishment and bolstering of surveillance patrols. By safeguarding Jaguars, we preserve the integrity of tropical forests and the ecosystem services, benefiting humans and biodiversity alike.
The Jaguar population in the Yucatan Peninsula represents the second largest population of jaguars, facing an accelerating scenario of habitat loss, climate change, and an increase in illegal activities. The severity of dry seasons, population reduction, and isolation compel jaguars and other wildlife to move into human landscapes, resulting in a higher frequency of human encounters that often lead to jaguar deaths.
The Felid Conservation Program of PPY focuses on establishing diverse schemes of natural protected areas, supporting surveillance to mitigate illegal activities, and providing wildlife with essential resources such as food and water during extreme dry seasons. To ensure our success, we collaborate with communities, government agencies, and NGOs across the three states of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.
The jaguar is an umbrella species; therefore, protection and surveillance actions implemented in the Yucatan Peninsula will benefit all wildlife and the ecosystem services they provide. Through our efforts, with the support of society, we aim to ensure the long-term survival of this magnificent predator of the American tropical forest. This will allow future generations to enjoy not only its majestic presence but also the environmental benefits it brings.
