Did you know there is a whole ecosystem with unique species and natural history within Mexico City? We're working with the people Xochimilco, Mexico, to recover this important wetland, which is the habitat of the Axolotl. In this project, we do actions to protect this and many other important species of plants and animals, like migrating birds. The axolotl only lives in this last remmanent of a great lake that existed and sustained the central valley of Mexico.
Xochimilco wetland is the last important water body in Mexico City, it's a rural area where people still produce food for them and for the whole city and it's a refuge for unique wildlife species. Yet, it's seriously threatened by urbanization. Native species of animals, like the axolotl are critically endangered, the same situation faces the whole lake that provides water to the big city and holds this unique ecosystem. There's still time to save this iconic species.
We are working to provide a secure and clean body of water with the ideal conditions to contain the original flora and fauna of the once, great lake of Central Mexico, where the axolotls lived and now there are just a few hundred, which makes them critically endangered in wildlife. When this 3-hectare space is finally conserved, the axolotl will have a refuge where it will be able to recover to a healthy population. This will also recover all wildlife and ecosistemic services associated.
We look forward to work with more people of the community and partners to conserve this wetland, raise awareness among visitors and locals and reforest more hectareas every year to counter the drying up of the streams and lake that sustains the wetland. Also, in the long-term, we hope to implement efforts to grow and reintroduce populations of this native species in other parts of this ecosystem.
