The Little Dog Was Kept in a Crate on a Balcony

By Emily Fromm | Chief Development Officer

Thank you for your support of the Petfinder Foundation's Emergency Medical Fund! Your donations are helping vulnerable pets like Cora.

Cora lived her entire life in a crate on a balcony with no human bond or love — just a bang on the crate when she whined or barked.

That changed when she was taken in by Guardians of Florida Animal Rescue in Fort Myers. "When we take on a dog coming from a horrible situation like that, we understand that we may have to devote several thousand dollars in medical costs to help her," says GFAR's Dana Bursch.

"What we didn't plan on was her emergency surgery to remove a stone lodged in her urinary tract before we even began with her severe orthopedic issues." Because Cora's legs were damaged by life in a too-small crate, she also needed surgeries to repair her hips and two knees.

Our grant helped to ease the burden of these costly procedures. "We are SO THANKFUL that we were awarded an Emergency Medical Grant from the Petfinder Foundation to help with the medical costs we incurred for Cora," Bursch says.

She adds: "The Petfinder Foundation provides wonderful support to smaller, boots-on-the-ground rescues like us and we are so thankful for its support in our mission!"
