Project update November 2015 to January 2016

We thank all our supporters for donating towards our campaign to save the lives of malnourished children.

During the three months (1st November 2015 to 31st January 2016), 70 malnourished children were admitted (35 Boys and 35 Girls). In this particular period, we have successfully discharged 53 children. We make an effort to cure all children who are facing the problem of malnutrition.

The steps to cure a malnourished child:

  • Feeding of admitted SAM  child (As per protocol); Feed Preparation for admitted mothers; Provision of food to mother;
  • Administration of Medication: Albendazole, Vitamin– A, IFA, Zinc, Folic Acid, Magsulf, Potclor; Administration of Medication: Antibiotics,  Immunization etc.; Child friendly games and puzzles
  • Statistical analysis of: Follow up data extracted from community level. Comparative analysis of target weight status of last batches.

By following these steps, children who have achieved the target weight of 15% when discharged are asked to come for 4 follow ups to check if they are healthy or have they started losing weight.

We also have done capacity building of mothers and family on health, hygiene and nutrition in both NRC.

Impact story of a child

Name of the child – Kajal

Father’s Name – Nanda

Mother’s name –  Manju

Block – Bhagwanpur

Age-  10 months

Manju and her husband Nanda lives in a village of Bhagwanpur, she has only one child. Both the parents were illiterate. There are eight members in the family and their earning was very meager due to which their condition was really bad. Moreover, Nanda didn’t even give a single penny at home and spent all his earnings on alcohol.  Manju’s only child Kajal was malnourished by birth and she frequently gets affected by cold, cough and abdomen diseases. From the last one month her condition was really bad and Manju took medicine from nearest medical store but her daughter was unable to recover. Also she did not have enough money to take her child to the nearest town hospital for better treatment. Whenever Manju asked her husband for money, he refused every time. One day Asha worker visited Manju’s house and advised to take her child to NRC Mahuavwhere kids like Kajal are being treated for free including in-house care. Then Manju understood and took her child to the NRC.

When Kajal came to NRC her details were:-

Weight – 3.950

MUAC – 9.0

Height- 62.5 cm

On the very first day when Doctor examined Kajal, every bone of her body was visible and her appetite was also found low. Then she was fed due to which her appetite started improving after 4 days. She also started gaining weight regularly.  After six days she started consuming mix diet and her health improved day by day. Manju was really glad by seeing the improvement in her child. Subsequent to the proper treatment from NRC, her targeted weight was achieved within 17 days. Manju also said that if Kajal would not have been brought here she would not have survived. Now, Kajal is healthy and doing fine.

At the day of discharge:-

Weight – 4.560

MUAC – 9.4

Height- 62.8 cm
