Because the funds have been coming in slowly, we haven’t done much. But we are also not seated. We continue to find monetary and non-monetary ways of keeping this campaign alive.
CCFU continues to share information about historic properties in different cities, Mbale inclusive through the weekly campaign #SaveUgandasBuiltHeritage by highlighting different properties and their significance and sometimes, threats posed and safeguarding measures.
In the same regard, CCFU has participated in a campaign to save Watoto Church, one of the historic buildings in metropolitan Kampala from demolition by the church. The building is Uganda’s first cinema hall and performance stage for Ugandan artists in the 1950’s. The campaign raised awareness about the importance of this property to Uganda and as of now, plans to transform it into a sky scrapper have been halted by the Kampala Capital City Authority. We hope that it will be saved.
At the end of March, CCFU held a capacity building training for 50 owners of historic properties, planners and architects in Kampala. The training was to raise the profile of these properties, equip their custodians with skills to conserve and safeguard them and be able to transform them into income-generating ventures.
We plan to complete documentation of Mbale City’s properties between May and June 2023, with support from our partner Bread for the World. A map will be produced highlighting these important places and their significance to the city. We hope that we can raise more resources to mark these properties with plagues to signify them as heritage places.
We thank you for your continued support.
