Some of the historic buildings in Mbale City are occupied by private owners, who in some cases are unaware of their significance and historic nature. The Foundation has held awareness campaigns with such individuals, companies and owners of historic buildings and sites to bring to their attention the importance of these places and build their capacity on safeguarding and protection measures.
CCFU held a meeting with city planners to bring to raise the profile of the existence of historic buildings and sites in the city. This meeting aimed at enabling planners and architects to protect historic properties in their midst whilst they erect new buildings.
In our previous reports, we shared our efforts to support the Kampala Capital City Authority on a bill on safeguarding historic buildings and sites in Kampala, which will inform our advocacy efforts to lobby for similar laws in other cities, including Mbale. The City Authority recently had a retreat to discuss the ordinance and we are hopeful that it will be passed.
CCFU is planning a capacity building training for owners of historic buildings and sites in all cities, including Mbale on how they can position their properties to make money from them through the promotion of built heritage tourism. This training will convene owners of the historic building, cultural leaders, cultural institutions and government representatives.
In partnership with the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) with the support of the Cultural Protection Fund (British Council) is embarking on a project: “Withstanding change: heritage amongst climate uncertainty” aimed at restoring the Sir Apollo Kaggwa cultural heritage site in Gayaza-Manyagwa, Wakiso District. This work will strengthen our efforts to safeguard and protect historic buildings in Uganda as a whole.
