Safeguarding Mbale's Built Heritage -An update

By Kisa Kasifa | Project Manager

An official launch of the campaign to safeguard Mbale’s built heritage was held in Mbale City on the 29th of April, 2022. Its aim was to raise awareness and engage key stakeholders on the importance of safeguarding and promoting Mbale’s built and natural heritage. On the same day, information boards were erected on 3 historical properties, which included; Semei Kakungulu’s House, North Road Primary School and Old Lukhobo House. This work was partly supported by the Irish Embassy in Uganda, which donated 2000 Euros. More details.

As a way of raising awareness about the importance of safeguarding our built and natural heritage, CCFU ran a short video contest for young people. The contest challenged young people to film themselves around historical buildings, sites and monuments in Mbale City, highlighting their significance and the need to safeguard them. The competition attracted 8 participants, and a panel of judges selected three winners who were rewarded with cash prizes amounting to 500,000 Uganda Shillings

The Foundation is still raising awareness, especially online. Historic properties in Mbale are part of our online campaign dubbed ‘#SaveUgandaBuiltHeritage’ where we share the history of historical properties, their significance and why they should be safeguarded.

In a related development, CCFU conducted a sensitisation and consultative workshop with the new political leadership of the Kampala Kapital City Authority and other stakeholders to orient them about a draft bill aimed at safeguarding historical buildings, sites and monuments in Kampala City. It is our hope that if this bill is passed and adopted as an Ordinance, it will inform the process for initiating similar ordinances in other cities including Mbale.

Mbale City has been chosen as the host of this year’s World Tourism Day, and we are planning to use this opportunity to scale up the publicity for our crowd fundraising campaign. We also hope to engage the Bugisu Parliamentary Association to not only contribute to the campaign but also help to popularise it.

We appreciate everyone that has supported us so far, by donating to this cause.

We still have a long way to go, especially with resource mobilization and we still need your help! Please keep donating to help us do this.
