Summary

The project "Save lives and Conserve Environment with Agroforestry". Its aim is to boost sustainable, pro-poor land-use in northern Uganda that received 1 million refugees. We focus on Arua district, where we work already, and on introducing improved low-cost tree establishment methods that farmers and refugees can use with better management methods for contour hedges with nitrogen-fixing trees/shrubs. Challenge

Northern Uganda has received 1 million refugees; Uganda own population outstandingly continue growing at a rate of 3.2%. Almost all rural food is cooked using wood and charcoal, and farmers want help to plant more trees instead of spoiling biodiverse forest. Climate change increasingly results in droughts or extreme rains, and trees and contour hedges are important to survive and the protected environment. Better methods are needed to plant trees without much cost, work, trucks and risks.

Solution

With the focus on local needs and priorities, we will demonstrate, test, teach, and facilitate sustainable income generating activities making it much easier and more beneficial to establish and manage the most beneficial types of trees and multipurpose shrubs. See article links. Low-cost soil- & water-conservation with many early benefits. Presentaion link https://goo.gl/7AJDbw

Long-Term Impact

The impact positive impact has been published by researchers also in fields of Southern Uganda and Kenya (as well as the need for the innovations). The loss of soil and water after heavy rains reduces or stops, soil organic carbon increases. Good fuel, fodder and poles are produced also between crops or in dry periods. Conflicts about natural resources changed to giving presents in a Uganda-study. Establishment of biodiversity corridors or rather a resilient network of multi-species hedges.
