Summary

We launched "Ny Trano Manga" (The Blue House) - Madagascar's first shelter for women, girls, and orphaned children. Survivors of rape, violence, and forced marriage find safety, dignity, and care. In a society where too many women are treated as objects or toys for abuse, this shelter is a lifeline. Every bed is complete, with over 20 women and 15 children. Many more are still waiting for a safe place. Led by local activist Mamy Duata, your support helps us protect lives and restore dignity.

Challenge

In southern Madagascar, many women and girls suffer rape, beatings, forced marriage, and survival sex-often by relatives, neighbors, or men in power. Girls are treated as objects, "toys" for male pleasure, with no control over their bodies or futures. Some flee after giving birth alone, barefoot and starving, carrying infants and trauma. There are no state shelters, no protection, no healing. If we don't help, they have no one. Their pain is met with silence, and their cries are ignored.

Solution

The shelter provides immediate protection, nutritional security, and emotional support for women and girls who have survived rape, violence, or forced marriage. Residents receive trauma-informed care, basic medical attention, and a safe place to rest and recover. Mothers are given space to care for their children, while the shelter offers structured activities, hygiene support, and educational guidance. Expansion efforts will allow us to serve more people and improve the quality of care.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help women and girls who have survived gender-based violence reclaim their dignity, physical and mental health, and sense of agency. With long-term shelter, care, and training, they can break the cycle of abuse, raise their children in safety, and rebuild their futures. As survivors regain confidence, many become peer mentors and community role models, helping others escape similar harm. The shelter will create generational change in Madagascar's most vulnerable regions.
