This project is to boost the cause of appropriate infant and young child feeding, of which breastfeeding is a crucial part.Breastfeeding needs protection,promotion & support as it is under threat.Vested corporate interests push breast milk substitutes (processed baby foods) and create disinformation campaigns to mislead mothers and deprive infants of the limitless benefits of breast milk.Infants are dying daily at the altar of greed, and we are fighting tooth and nail to stop this colossal crime
In many countries today, breastfeeding rates are low, breastfeeding in public has been made a taboo and bottle-feeding infants with artificial breastmilk substitutes has become a culture.This is because big corporates aggressively market their product, while hardly any country has a policy for protecting & financially supporting breastfeeding. A supportive environment for women to breastfeed,free of any commercial influence is required to ensure the fundamental health & development of children.
At BPNI, our project will work on the following areas: 1) Educating policy makers and lobbying for better policies. 2) On-ground training of health workers and care providers to support mothers. 3) Monitoring the industry and company compliance to the National Law and International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes, and facilitating the initialization of the policies into practice. 4) Promoting Breastfeeding culture through social mobilization activities globally.
With our project we will accomplish three key objectives. 1) Making the world aware of this vital yet ignored issue of how one of our species' most natural behavior is being subverted due to corporate greed. 2) Creating enlightened policies across the nations of the world to protect promote and support breastfeeding. 3) Removing cultural and manufactured taboos against breastfeeding, so we have a world where women fearlessly breastfeed their babies without guilt, shame or blame.
