Virunga Hippo Crisis: Project Update

By AGIZO | Coordinator

Virunga National Park is facing a serious wildlife and public-health concern following the reported deaths of more than 50 hippopotamuses from anthrax around Lake Edward. Our project, “Saving Virunga Hippos from Anthrax,” was created to support community awareness, prevention, local capacity building, and the safe management of affected animal carcasses in coordination with relevant authorities and technical partners. We are currently in the preparation and resource-mobilization phase, including the identification of trainers and learners who will participate in the planned activities.

Our total fundraising goal is USD 150,000, and we have so far received USD 77. While this is only a first step toward the resources required, we are deeply grateful to every donor who has contributed. Through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we have an opportunity to reach a wider international community and build the support needed to move this project forward. We sincerely thank GlobalGiving and our first donors for believing in the protection of Virunga’s wildlife and communities.

The road ahead is still long, but we believe that meaningful change begins with people choosing to act. We invite more supporters to join us as we work toward our goal and prepare the next phase of this project. Together, we can help communities stay informed and safer, strengthen local capacity, and protect one of Africa’s most precious ecosystems.
