Save Hippopotamuses from Anthrax in Virunga Park

Contexte et urgence :
Le parc national des Virunga, trésor écologique mondial, est actuellement confronté à une crise dévastatrice. Plus de 50 hippopotames ont été victimes de la maladie du charbon, causée par la bactérie Bacillus anthracis . Ces décès tragiques, observés dans le lac Édouard, mettent en danger non seulement la faune sauvage, mais aussi la santé des communautés locales qui dépendent de cet écosystème vital. La propagation de cette maladie représente une menace urgente qui exige une action immédiate.

Objectifs du projet :

1. Enlever et entrer en toute sécurité les hippopotames morts afin de limiter la propagation de la maladie.
2. Sensibiliser les communautés locales aux risques liés à la maladie du charbon et aux mesures préventives, notamment en provoquant la consommation de viande contaminée.
3. Anciennement les équipes locales à la gestion de la faune sauvage et à la surveillance sanitaire afin de prévenir de futures épidémies.
4. Protéger la biodiversité du parc et assurer la sécurité et la santé des populations riveraines.

Situation actuelle et plan d'action :

• Ce projet, doté d'un budget total de 150 000 $ , a déjà permis de récolter 76 $ grâce à une collaboration avec GlobalGiving , et nous sommes convaincus que ce soutien nous aidera à atteindre notre objectif.
• Nous sommes en train d'identifier les formateurs et les stagiaires qui travailleront sur le terrain.
• Les interventions sur le terrain débuteront en novembre 2025 , avec des équipes spécialisées chargées de sécuriser les zones contaminées et de former les communautés.
• Un suivi continu sera mis en place afin d'évaluer l'impact et d'ajuster les interventions en fonction des besoins.

• Préservation immédiate et durable de la population d'hippopotames.
• Réduction significative des risques sanitaires pour les communautés locales.
• Renforcer les capacités locales de gestion des crises sanitaires liées à la faune sauvage.
• Sensibilisation et implication accrue de la communauté dans la protection de l'écosystème du lac Édouard et du parc national des Virunga.

General Context

Virunga, one of Africa’s most biodiverse parks, is facing a severe crisis. More than fifty hippopotamuses have been found dead in the waters of Lake Edward, victims of anthrax contamination. This deadly disease, caused by Bacillus anthracis, affects both wildlife and people, creating a major health risk in a region already strained by insecurity.

2. Problem Statement

The emergence of anthrax cases within the park’s ecosystems poses an immediate threat:

• to wildlife species already under pressure,
• to nearby communities exposed to contamination,
• and to the ecological balance of Lake Edward, essential for the survival of thousands of families.

Armed conflict in some areas of the park complicates interventions, slows down the removal of carcasses, and increases the danger of further spread.

3. Project Objectives

In response to this emergency, the project aims to:

• Quickly remove contaminated hippopotamuses and ensure safe burial procedures.
• Prevent the spread of anthrax across critical zones of the park.
• Raise awareness among local communities about health risks, the dangers of bushmeat, and protective measures.
• Work with local partners to strengthen prevention and response capacities.
• Secure long-term protection for Virunga’s wildlife and the families who depend on it.

4. Total Budget

The estimated cost of responding effectively to this crisis is USD 150,000.
To date, USD 76 has been raised through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, a first step that encourages us and gradually brings us closer to our goal.

5. Current Progress

• Identification of trainers, field teams, and community participants is underway.
• Mapping of contaminated areas around Lake Edward has already begun.
• Initial awareness efforts have reached several nearby families.
• Full implementation is scheduled for November 2025, once the teams are trained and fully equipped.
