It’s been a busy and productive start to 2023, with plans for the future populations of Gili turtles looking brighter every day!
This year, the rainy season has almost ended and we’ve already welcomed three turtle nests successfully hatched and freed! Within quick succession, 2 nests in the south and one in the north hatched. Luckily staff of Pondok Santi helped, here is a beach that is well managed and many turtles frequent here for nesting. This may be due to where these females were born (did you know female turtles return to the beach they were born to lay their eggs?!) Or because Pondok Santi follows strict environmental rules within their resort, of keeping lights turned low or off at night, keeps the beach clear of bean bags, sun loungers and tables, and keeps the beach as environmentally welcoming as possible.
Beach Erosion
We've also seen a continued alarming loss of sand and areas to nest on some beaches due to developments and human-based activities. This was similar to the last year, with the same illegal developments creating more and more subsidence in the beaches, and accelerated sand and beach loss in certain nesting hotspots.
Of the 7.3km of sandy beaches surrounding Gili Trawangan, only 3.74km remain free of walls and man-made obstacles (this doesn't include a large influx of small unregistered start-ups putting up semi-temporary buildings on the beach, along with many bars refusing to clear away sun beds/loungers and tables after they close.
In the northwest of Gili T, there are still unfinished works on a new water plant that was installed without proper permits in the pandemic and hasn't been completed. More than 0.75km of potential nesting beaches are still blocking access to critical nesting areas. Tragically, this has remained unchanged since last season.
However!
With all the challenges, we have some exciting progress to enter this nesting season with confidence and determination! We’ve established the Proyek Penyu Gili Trawangan (Project Turtle Gili T) with six of our most committed local team members ready to launch beachside workshops to teach local staff and beachgoers the safe standards of dealing with turtles nesting on the beach, and newborn hatchling assistance. This way, we’ve created a remote network, so that anyone in the group can be alerted to nesting behaviours all season, making callouts and team leaders more accessible to help more turtle nests from getting poached or babies previously ‘kept safe’ in buckets of water.
We aim to create stronger relationships with local businesses to increase awareness and education about the importance and threats of our Gili turtles. We aim to see a decrease in hatchings kept in buckets, tanks or shallow pools and encourage immediate release to the ocean.
Our Hatchery Plans Continue…. The Gili Way hatchery at Hotel Lumi has project plans that are looking stronger by the day. We continue to consult on the education that will be made inside the exhibition centre, whilst creating a storyboard to take guests on a journey through the turtles treacherous life in hope that we can convince all guests and tourists to take more action to protect turtles in the ocean and on the beaches! We want to combine the protection of the turtle eggs that are at risk of flooding, drowning and trampling on the beaches, along with fun and unique education for tourists to the island.
This WILL be one of Gili's biggest tourist attractions, and the best thing of all, it’ll be a great example to show the rest of Indonesia that you can teach about turtles without having to exploit or keep captive turtles in terrible conditions for the entertainment of tourists.
None of this would have been possible without the support and donations from our supporters, you can find out more about our latest project to protect turtles and donate to save a turtle over on GlobalGiving with our turtle campaign. A huge thank you for any support and donation towards Gili Trawangan's first ethical turtle hatchery, we are so grateful to be working hard in this position and we are planning another exciting update very soon!
