The Oregon Humane Society is pleased to report that Milagro, a nearly lifeless cat found abandoned inside a storage container in February, has found his forever home. Milagro, a four-year-old orange tabby, was rescued from severe neglect by OHS Humane Officers on February 9, 2011. Milagro's former owner was Anthony Glenn Johnson, a transient, who was arraigned in Clackamas County Circuit Court on March 2. He failed to appear in court for trial on animal neglect charges. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
Milagro's new owner is Joanne Godfrey, an OHS volunteer, and Milagro's foster parent. "Milagro has shown love and affection to other cats and humans even though he has been through so much," said Godfrey. "Helping him grow back into a typical cat has given me a sense of purpose and support in helping those that cannot help themselves, in this case a sweet little orange tabby cat." She adopted Milagro on May 29 as a birthday present to herself.
Many departments at the Oregon Humane Society helped Milagro over the past four months starting with investigations, medical care, and foster care as his tragic story gained national attention. The adult male tabby was entangled in what appeared to be a makeshift leash attached to a shopping cart inside the rented storage locker in Oregon City. Judging from the cat's condition, the OHS medical team estimated that he had been without food or water for two to four weeks. The red tabby appeared lifeless when seized by OHS Humane Investigator Austin Wallace.
