Feb. 9, 2011 Portland, OR: A nearly lifeless cat abandoned inside a storage container in Oregon City is recuperating today after being rescued by a Humane Investigator from the Oregon Humane Society.
The adult male tabby was entangled in what appeared to be a makeshift leash attached to a shopping cart inside the rented storage locker at the Money Saver Mini Storage on Molalla Avenue in Oregon City. Judging from the cat’s condition, the OHS medical team estimates that he had been without food or water for two to four weeks.
The red tabby appeared lifeless when seized by OHS Humane Investigator Austin Wallace. The cat also had numerous wounds to his head, most likely from unsuccessful attempts to escape from the tangled rope that trapped him underneath the shopping cart. The owner of the cat, if found, will likely be charged with first- and second-degree animal neglect. punishable up to one year in jail and a fine of $6,250.
The management of the storage facility heard an animal in distress this morning, and called OHS to investigate. Officer Wallace removed the animal from the facility around 11 am. OHS is monitoring the cat closely and is hoping he will eventually make a full recovery.
OHS is now in the process of locating the individual who rented the storage locker. "We are very glad the management of this facility called the Oregon Humane Society. This cat was close to death and their phone call probably saved his life," said Officer Wallace.
