A Community in Need as Winter Approaches

Displaced families from Tirah Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, continue to face serious challenges after being forced to leave their homes. Many vulnerable households have limited resources to meet their basic needs, and the arrival of winter makes their situation even more difficult.

Children, older people, women, and people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable when families lack adequate shelter, warm clothing, blankets, and reliable access to safe drinking water. For families already experiencing displacement and financial hardship, preparing for colder weather can be an overwhelming challenge.

At this critical time, humanitarian assistance is not simply about providing supplies. It is about protecting health, restoring dignity, offering emotional support, and helping families face uncertainty with hope.

Local Community Action: Small Contributions Making a Difference

Despite the operational challenges facing our organization, Sanash Welfare Foundation has continued to respond to urgent local needs through community-based fundraising, including the use of traditional charity piggy banks to mobilize small contributions from local supporters.

Through these locally raised resources, we have provided emergency assistance to affected people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including:

Psychosocial support to help people cope with the emotional stress associated with displacement and uncertainty.
Water-purification tablets to help households treat drinking water and reduce risks associated with unsafe water.
Emergency tents to support the urgent shelter needs of affected families.

These efforts demonstrate how local solidarity can help communities respond to humanitarian needs even when access to larger funding sources is constrained. Every small contribution can help strengthen a collective response to a family's immediate needs.

We are grateful to the local people and supporters who contributed through our community fundraising efforts. Their generosity has helped us take practical action while continuing to work toward the wider objectives of this project.

Why Our GlobalGiving Project Is Facing Delays

We want to be transparent with our international supporters about an important operational challenge.

Sanash Welfare Foundation is still working to establish an organizational bank account that satisfies the applicable Know Your Customer (KYC), banking, government-department, and tax-compliance requirements in Pakistan. The process has become more complicated and time-consuming than anticipated.

As a result, the intended implementation of the broader GlobalGiving-funded project has been delayed. Our locally funded emergency assistance should not be confused with full implementation of the GlobalGiving project: the local response described above was supported through separate community fundraising efforts.

We recognize the importance of financial accountability, regulatory compliance, and responsible stewardship of donor funds. We remain committed to addressing the outstanding requirements and establishing the necessary arrangements before proceeding with the wider project activities.

We cannot promise a specific completion date for these procedures, but we will continue working toward compliance and providing transparent updates on our progress.

Winter Relief Is an Urgent Priority

While administrative procedures continue, the humanitarian needs of displaced families do not stop. Winter brings additional risks for people who have lost access to secure housing and their usual sources of income.

Our immediate priority is to mobilize further support for essential winter items, particularly:

Warm clothing for children and adults
Blankets and warm bedding
Emergency shelter and protection from cold weather
Safe drinking water and essential hygiene supplies
Psychosocial support and assistance for vulnerable households

The availability and delivery of these items will depend on the resources secured and the operational arrangements permitted under applicable requirements.

With sufficient support and the necessary arrangements in place, we aim to strengthen our response and help more displaced families meet their urgent needs with dignity.

Project Update: From Emergency Relief to Sustainable Recovery for Displaced Families from Tirah Valley

On behalf of Sanash Welfare Foundation, we extend our sincere gratitude to all donors, supporters, and partners who have stood with displaced families from Tirah Valley during one of the most challenging periods of their lives. Your generosity has enabled us to provide critical assistance to vulnerable households affected by conflict, insecurity, displacement, and limited access to essential services.

Transitioning from Emergency Response to Development Support

We are pleased to share that our project has now entered a transition phase, gradually moving from an emergency humanitarian response toward a longer-term development and resilience-building initiative.

When this project was launched, the immediate priority was to support families who had been forced to leave their homes in Tirah Valley and seek safety in the outskirts of Peshawar and surrounding areas. Many arrived with limited resources, uncertain livelihoods, and urgent humanitarian needs including food, basic household items, healthcare, and protection support.

While humanitarian needs remain significant, the situation has evolved. Many displaced families have now spent extended periods away from their places of origin and require sustainable solutions that help them rebuild their lives, strengthen their resilience, and restore their dignity.

Operating in a Challenging Environment

Tirah Valley remains a geographically difficult and security-sensitive area where humanitarian access continues to be limited. These access constraints make direct interventions inside the valley challenging and often restrict the movement of humanitarian actors.

As a result, Sanash Welfare Foundation continues to focus its efforts on supporting displaced families who have settled in communities on the outskirts of Peshawar and nearby locations. These families continue to face numerous challenges, including unemployment, inadequate income opportunities, limited access to education, and barriers to healthcare and social services.

Our Current Focus

As we move into the development phase, our interventions are increasingly focused on:

Livelihood restoration and income-generating opportunities
Skills development and vocational training for youth and adults
Educational support for displaced children
Women's empowerment initiatives
Community resilience and social cohesion activities
Access to health, hygiene, and protection services
Strengthening self-reliance among vulnerable households

Our goal is not only to address immediate needs but also to help families build sustainable futures and reduce dependency on humanitarian assistance.
