Bees are vital to our health and the environment. 71/100 of plants which are responsible for 90% of the global food supply rely upon the bee-pollinators. Queen Rearing Program completely transforms beekeeping in Greece by optimizing the regional genetic material to develop more resilient and productive bee colonies, while youth in the Greek provinces secure a career. The program secures our ecosystem's protection but also its empowerment and resistance towards the challenging climate conditions.
The restriction of beekeeping flora, the extensive use of agrochemicals, disease outbreaks and climate change are major factors in reducing beekeeping products and discouraging young beekeepers from being occupied with beekeeping. Complete genetic improvement of bees can only be achieved through an extensive grafting program by professionally trained queen rearing experts, "the grafters".
Professional queen rearing experts, which have been trained as grafters, will organize queen rearing using the grafting method, to produce genetically improved queen bees, transferring the knowledge they have gathered to 200 beekeepers. The purpose is to utilize and improve the existing bee genetic material and to familiarize them with the process of producing quality queens (with the grafting method), with the aim of continuing the valuable process of pollination.
By optimizing the regional genetic material and the development of more resilient and productive bee colonies, we transform beekeeping in Greece, having a positive impact on the conservation of natural environment & biodiversity and the local/national economy (new job opportunities for beekeepers). | New Agriculture New Generation was established in 2018 with the initiative and donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) within the framework of the Recharhing the Youth program.
