Ten little Hearts Activity Report

By Ebiuwairo Uwagboe | Communications, Media and Programs Coordinator

Location: Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH), Oraifite, Nigeria
Implementing Organization: Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF)
Partner: VOOM Foundation

From April 25 to May 16, 2026, the Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation (SEOF), in partnership with the VOOM Foundation, successfully conducted its 9th Pediatric and Adult Open Heart Surgery Medical Mission at the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital (DIOMH), Oraifite.

The four-week mission brought together 75 local and international medical and non-medical volunteers from Nigeria, the United States, Canada, Uruguay, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bangladesh. The multidisciplinary team provided specialized cardiac care, including open-heart surgeries, interventional cardiology procedures, and advanced cardiac diagnostics to underserved patients.

A total of 98 cardiac procedures were successfully completed:

  • 22 Pediatric Interventional Cardiology Procedures

  • 17 Pediatric Open-Heart Surgeries

  • 38 Adult Interventional Cardiology Procedures

  • 18 Adult Open-Heart Surgeries

The mission also strengthened Nigeria's local healthcare capacity through collaboration between international and Nigerian medical professionals, facilitating knowledge transfer, skills development, and professional exchange.

Impact

The mission provided life-saving cardiac interventions to children and adults who may otherwise have been unable to access specialized treatment due to cost and limited availability. Beyond the immediate medical outcomes, the mission advanced SEOF's long-term commitment to building a sustainable, high-quality cardiovascular healthcare system in Nigeria.

Through the Health for Every Home project, SEOF remains committed to reducing healthcare inequities and ensuring that vulnerable individuals have access to the specialized care they need, regardless of their financial circumstances.
