Dear Kind Hearts
Greetings from SANKALP team
The quarter from August-October was a happening quarter at Sankalp. We had many activities including Parent meet, classroom renovations and lot of festival celebrations.
Two classrooms at Sankalp had tin shed roof and were very hot for almost 6 months in a year. Moreover, there was no glass door or windows in the class room so lot of dust used to collect. “Darshan” club agreed to finance the cost of providing false ceiling, Sliding glass windows and a door along with a shade above the entrance passage to protect the class room from rain dust, rain water and sun. The entire work was completed during four successive weekends when Sankalp remains closed. Children & teachers would now feel less hot in the class room.
First parent meet of this session was conducted on 24th August. The purpose of this meet was to provide professional guidance through our experts to the parents for their active participation in the rehabilitation process of their child. Guiding them about taking care of children at home, explain Do’s & Don’ts and also to get feedback from them on their child’s progress. This is considered very essential by us because many parents are not adequately educated and therefore, are not able to understand the behavior of their child and how to handle them.
This meet also had a guest speaker Mrs. Alpa Jani whose child suffers from Down’s Syndrome. Finding her son’s interest in dancing she decided to learn dancing herself and also completed master’s degree in special education for taking a proactive role in rehabilitating her son. Today her son has not only overcome his disability but has made his name in the field of dancing and has become a professional dancer. Mrs. Jani not only shared her experience but also motivated the parents by narrating her journey and advised parents not to sulk or curse their luck or give up but be pro-active in rehabilitation process of their child. The meet was very well appreciated by all parents who attended it.
Children at SANKALP have a tradition to celebrate all festivals to develop feeling of universal brotherhood and also to improve their social skills. Celebration began with Independence Day then Parsi New Year “PATETI”, RAKSHABANDHAN, “JANMASHTAMI” and “GANAPATI” festival followed by “NAVRATRI” and “DASHEHARA festival.
We at Sankalp also encourage all the children to be aware about contemporary topics and events. This year the birthday of the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October was celebrated by the entire nation as “cleanliness day”. Sankalp children were taught about the importance of maintaining cleanliness around us. They also took part in the cleanliness drive around the center. Similarly, the importance of our eco system and how to preserve it was the theme of this year’s Diwali festival. Children were explained this and this year the festival was celebrated in an Eco friendly manner.
Presently Sankalp children are enjoying “DIWALI” & Gujarati New Year holidays from 20th October until 9th November. Centre reopens on 10th November.
Let’s share what one of our volunteer Tanya Singh has to say about her experience at Sankalp:
“The day I came to SANKALP, I was greatly moved by the very aura of this place. SANKALP, in spite of such grave disabilities contained all within it, being treated within it, gave out such positive vibes. The children here seemed to be all so happy, carefree, loving and well-mannered as well. Even the teachers, hats off to their patience with which they handle such kids.
The time, money and ENERGY spent by the organization on this noble cause are commendable and the dedication, the delicacy, and the love, with which the children here are taken care of, are completely outstanding. With the scientific treatment techniques, in addition to all its other qualities, SANKALP is truly a blessing in disguise to such special children.”
Tanya Singh
Improvements in the life of children at SANKALP drives every member of our team be it the trustees, board members, staff or the volunteers to do their best and it gives the entire team necessary push of enthusiasm to continue moving towards bringing meaningful change in the lives of special children with disabilities.
