Sanitary Care - Well, Toilet, and Septic Tank

Greetings.

What I saw during our visit to Teahplay School in April of this year won't leave me - children lining up for food without washing their hands. Images ot them defecating or urinating then holding the plastic or enamel containers to get food was very disturbing to me.

Sam and I had the privilege of having a feast for these students. Abigail, R.O.C.K.'s representative in Liberia, coordinated the cooking of the food (beef from the cow that was butchered in the village earlier that morning, white rice and potato greens). She was assisted by several young ladies and parents. The food was cooked offsite then taken to the school in large pots. 

The children jostled in the line, trying to get as close as possible to the front, their containers in their hands. As they waited eagerly for their food, I kept asking the ladies, "where will they wash their hands?" There was absolutely no water on the school premesis.

This troubling exprience makes me even more determined to seek help to raise $15,000 to bring modern toliets, a septic tank, well and water tower to the Teahplay School. These children have been forgotten far too long, they deserve more.

Greetings.   

R.O.C.K.’s vice president and I just returned from visiting the Teahplay School in Liberia, West Africa. We presented the desks and chairs to the students who were sitting on classroom floors. We also presented blackboards for each classroom, and desks and chairs for each teacher. We also treated the children to a special meal of beef stew, rice, and potato greens. The students and staff were extremely excited and thankful.

This was possible because of kind and thoughtful donors like you.

But a dangerous and distressing problem remains. There is no water on the school grounds and the students and staff use pit toilets or the bush to relieve themselves. Students and teachers often become sick because of these unsanitary conditons - no water to wash their hands. Land was identified for the placement of decent toilets, a septic tank, well and a water tower at the school. A hallway would be built to connect the toilets to the school so that the students and staff do not have to walk in the rain to use the bathrooms.

We have already started on the “Road to Sanitary Care” for the students and staff of the Teahplay School. It is estimated that US$15,000 is needed to complete this project. So far, we have raised $870. We need $14,130.00 to bring sanitary care - clean water and decent toilets - to the Teahplay School. Our goal is to start and complete this project for the academic year 2024-2025.
