The regular school year resumed in September 2020 and ended April of 2021. Due to the ongoing pandemic that has been on since 2020 and the impact it had on education; schools had to consider options. Globally, many schools were closed for months meaning students were unable to attend school in person and for many, they had to consider and opt for virtual learning.
For us at Shinning Light School; the option of online learning was challenging as many students do not have access to internet at home and in many cases, they do not have computers or laptops to use. This is part of the reason why we plan to have a campaign to request donations for Used computers and laptops. With this, students can borrow laptops or computers from the computer lab for use at home. It will be run in a similar fashion as a library when students loan out books.
To further help the students catch up with any of the curriculum and learning for the year that were unmet; we also had a summer school program and encouraged all our students to attend. Our teachers also included improvement of skills for the students and had activities to encourage and build; Confidence, Team work and leadership skills as well as character building.
The reviews of the summer program was excellent and our teachers and students all gave great reviews of the additional time spent at school over the summer months. They were really happy for the opportunity and the additional learning from the summer session.
We at IBSF would like to thank all our sponsors for your continued support in making this summer program a reality.
As the world is still dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, students have resumed full time classes and education, but we are still being very careful and ensuring social distancing is maintaned at all times.
In the past couple of months, a new sustaininability project focused on agriculture and animal rearing was launched. The project has been gaining momentum and the students and teachers are very excited about the prospects of the project.
Farm animals and agricultural products were purchased to enable planting of various food items. The goal is to expand this project to provide sufficent food items that can be used to subsidize the food items currently being purchased and also give an opportunity to educate and train teachers and students.
Agriculture is at the center of the Nigerian economy, providing the main source of livelihood for the majority of Nigerians. Having our students and teachers acquire this new life skills course not only provides the students an opportunity to explore their instincts, it is also practical because it opens the door to a future career in farming and animal rearing. Agriculture is not only an occupation for people but also a way of life.
In such a short time the students have blossomed. During our last trip to The Light School it warmed our hearts to see the pride in their faces as they showed off their farm and animals to the IBSF Board of Directors and volunteers. We were so impressed with their productivity and passion about this agriculture and animal rearing project. See pictures below!
As part of our plan to support the project, we will be introducing a full time Agriculture program and getting an Agronomist to train and educate the teachers and students.
We hope you are all as thrilled as we are that it's possible to positively impact a village such as Ishahayi Beach through educational projects like the new Agriculture Project! We will continue to share updates and photos as the project progresses and we thank you for all your support and encouragement!
Happy Newyear Everyone. This is our first report of the year 2021.
In November of 2020, we sent information to our sponsors and friends of IBSF about our intent to put a smile on the faces of our students and teachers by giving them Christmas holiday gifts. Given that it had been a hard year for everyone with the global pandemic, having a chance to brighten their holidays was a huge dream for us at IBSF.
Thankfully, our sponsors and friends heeded our call and came through with lots of donations to help us accomplish our goal.
With the donations, we were able to give all 200 students with gift bags containing stationerys, toys & gift items. In addition, all our teachers received gift items to appreciate all their hard work and contribution throughout the year.
We want to use this opportunity to thank everyone who donated and supported our cause. We thank you for all your support and want to reiterate that this couldn't have happened without you.
We wish you all a wonderful year and hope that this year will bring an end to the global pandemic.
Covid19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the school year as schools have been closed since March 2020. We have also been unable to visit the school & village due to movement restrictions and also because we wanted to wait till the end of the pandemic to reduce the chances of people coming from the cities and spreading the virus to the village where our school is situated.
The government granted permission for students in certain classes (Year 9 and Year 12) to return to school in August 2020 in preparation for their final exams which was reschuedled for September 2020.
The Year 9 students write an exam to proceed to High School and the Year 12 students write an exam to graduate High School. Due to the fact that many students were not able to attend online learning, the resumption in August 2020 enabled students to prepare for their exams with their teachers in a face to face enviroment.
We had to put in place a daily sanitization plan to keep classes clean at all times. All students are required to have a mask on and maintain social distancing while at school. All students and staff members are required to frequently wash their hands and we had water stations and soap at multiple stations to make this accessible. This is to ensure that we keep our students and teachers safe. This process put in place has worked so far and we have not had any report of Covid19 in our school.
Our Year 9 & Year 12 students have now completed their exams and the government has recently announced that other students in other classes can now start attending classes in school. This is done with reduced school attendance with each group of students coming only 2-3days on a weekly basis. We will continue to do all we can to ensure we keep everyone safe while at school.
We hope you are all staying safe all across the world and we continue to pray for the end of the pandemic. We are also are sending a huge THANK YOU from Nigeria! All your support and encouragement makes these projects possible and we couldn't do this without you.
The outbreak of the coronavirus has impacted the world in a profound way. There has been loss of lives all around the world with heathcare works dedicating their time and efforts in taking care of the sick. It has been a very difficult time for everyone all around the world. Many countries have been pushed into recession, shools have closed, many countries still on lockdown and many borders closed for incoming and outgoing flights.
Our students at the Shinning Light School have been at home since schools were ordered to close in March 2020 and there is no sign of when students will be asked to return to schools. Many students in Nigeria and around the world have resorted to Online Learning with teachers conducting classes through online mediums such as Zoom Meetings. This has worked well for schools that are set up for that. Adoption of online learning is dependent on both consumer who are the students and the customer who are the parents. In addition, there needs to be adequate internet connections for the students in their homes and for the teachers at school. Currently, we do have minimal internet service used when students have to watch online resource videos with their teachers.
Unfortunately, in our case, our students have not been able to benefit from online learning. At the school, we have just a couple of computers/laptops and do not have tablets or Labtops for our students or teachers. Many of our students do not own a computer or labtop. This reality has exposed one of the areas we need to work on to ensure our students get more access to technology and can benefit from the use of it in the future. A labtop/computer drive will be completed in the future by asking for donations of used/new labtops/computers. We will also be contacting telecommunication companies to seek their assistance in getting subsidized rates for internet connection for our school to give us unlimited internet access for students to be able to access online resources even during regular face to face learning in the classroom.
We are thankful that our students & teachers are safe at home with their families. We continue to pray for healing across the world, for comfort to all the families impacted, and an end to the pandemic. Thank you for your continued support of the Shinning Light School.
