Update on the Sahel

By Heidi Reed | Edesia's Communications Manager

Plumpy'Nut can bring a child back to life
Plumpy'Nut can bring a child back to life

Overall, the most recent news from the Sahel is more encouraging than discouraging. According to a recent report from July 2012 (see link below), the entire region benefited from good rainfall conditions in June and July, giving farmers a window of opportunity to plant crops, although Mauritania and Senegal are still reporting large rainfall deficits. There are ongoing threats, though, including swarms of locusts, ongoing instability in Mali, and high prices in the marketplace that prevent the poorest from eating well.

In the midst of the crisis in the Sahel, UNICEF and its implementing partners on the ground have been doing everything possible to protect the most vulnerable children in the region. From our factory in Providence, Rhode Island, we recently shipped to UNICEF Chad some 5,000 boxes of Plumpy'Nut, the miracle peanut-paste that can literally bring a child suffering from severe acute malnutrition back to life.

I just wanted to than you again for supporting our project. Your generosity made it possible for us to extend to UNICEF the lowest possible price, so that they in turn could reach as many children as possible. Of course, every dollar you donated made a difference, but your caring is what really made waves and inspired us.

From all of us at Edesia, thank you.
