Summary

The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is one of Australia's most endangered native mammal. Once widespread, it was declared extinct in the wild due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species such as foxes and cats. Located on the outskirts of Melbourne, Woodlands Historic Park became one of the first Eastern Barred Bandicoot reintroduction sites. Our funding for this sanctuary has fallen through and we assistance to keep these bandicoots safe from extinction.

Challenge

To keep the Woodlands Bandicoot Sanctuary running and protect the future of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot, we need help. Every donation helps us continue safeguarding this precious eco-engineer and save an Australian species from extinction. You can help bring them back - for good.

Solution

To survive and thrive, the Eastern Barred Bandicoot population at the Woodlands site needs to maintain around 400 individuals. But these shy, nocturnal marsupials have short lifespans (just 2 to 3 years) so population numbers fluctuate quickly. That's why regular monitoring, restoring native grassland habitat, maintaining the predator-proof fence, and carrying out educational programs is essential in helping keep their population in good stead. All activities that require funding to carry out.

Long-Term Impact

Keeping the Woodlands Sanctuary running will help the Eastern Barred Bandicoot population thrive. It is one of the few places in Victoria that contains original native grassland from before European settlement, and is necessary habitat for bandicoots whose digging for food aerates the soil, improves plant growth, and reduces soil compaction. They are considered ecosystem engineers, and their activities benefit other species and potentially even agriculture. Let's safeguard them from extinction.
