2015: A Year To Give Thanks For Water

As 2015 draws to a close, we would like to give you an update on the progress that Blue Planet Network's 115 member organizations are making around the world to enable access to clean water and sanitation for communities in some of the most challenged places in the world.

Whether it is Nicaragua or Kenya, Vietnam or India...or even central California, Blue Planet Network member organizations are working with their community partners to bring clean water and sanitation to schools, home and village gathering places. This is the first step to improved health and the chance for education and economic advancement that every person deserves. As you will see below, our members track projects on Blue Planet Network responsible for bringing clean water and/or sanitation to over 2.2 million people. They couldn't do it without your support.

On behalf of our member organizations and the communities they serve, thank you for answering the call "Water is life. Pass it on." May you have a happy, healthy 2016 full of clean water!

You're invited to follow progress in Honduras with Blue Planet Network!

We have a few updates for you!

Firstly, thank you again for supporting Blue Planet Network member, Pure Water for the World and their crucial water systems for schools across Trojes, Honduras. The implementation of the project began in May 2014 and was completed in late September 2014. The project will continually be monitored on Blue Planet Network here for the best chance to ensure long-term functioning. While our fundraising term for this project on our GlobalGiving page has come to a close, we welcome you to follow Pure Water for the World online here and to visit their projects tracked on Blue Planet Network here. Pure Water for the World will continue their due diligence and update their projects via Blue Planet Network’s award-winning monitoring and knowledge sharing programs as described here.

We welcome you to support other Blue Planet Network member projects on our general GlobalGiving page here. We hold funding rounds for our peer approved member projects of which your funds will support.

Once again, your donation made through GlobalGiving is supporting the construction of bio-sand filters for drinking water and latrines, deworming medicine, and hygiene education for schools across the Trojes region.

Schools will become a safe haven. Children will attend school more regularly and the attendance of young girls will increase. Overall, children and families will spend less time sick or in the hospital and away from their school and community. Children will learn hygiene skills that they can practice long-term and continually share with their families. Put simply - children will move from merely surviving to thriving in their community.

Meet the people and process behind clean water for Trojes!

Click here and meet the real people, challenges and process behind clean water for Trojes, Honduras!

Did you know that 70% of households in Trojes do not have access to safe water? Instead they use water directly from the highly contaminated river nearby.
Did you know that 1/2 of the population of Trojes does not even have a toilet? This leads to open defecation which directly pollutes the drinking water supply.
Did you know that workers in Trojes survive on less than $1 a day?

The good news is that, thanks to you and your donation to Blue Planet Network's member Pure Water for the World, these statistics are improving. Through this campaign you are supporting Pure Water for the World's main objective to improve health by reducing the instances of diarrhea across schools in Trojes.

Pure Water for the World engages in simple and sustainable local latrine and filter construction coupled with community hygiene and health education in order to empower Trojes and lift the region out of poverty. Through the video link above you can see first-hand the 4-step process of planning, implementation, construction and health follow-up. You will see demonstrations of how contaminated, murky water is effectively cleaned through simple concrete filters filled with sand, gravel and pvc piping to produce between 5 and 15 gallons of safe water per hour. Most anyone can operate these filters. We don't need rocket science to change people's lives. Long-term success in health and water systems in Trojes is being made possible through the building of community ownership and applying simply, cost-effective technology that is routinely maintained.

What makes Pure Water for the World such a valuable Blue Planet Network member is that they take the critical steps of identifying challenges and continue to monitor the success of solutions. For example, in the video you will learn about community education, how local terrain and road conditions affect transportation of resources, and the need for follow-up anti-parasitic medicine.

What's more is that Pure Water for the World substantiates their process and challenges by:

Engaging in peer review with other Blue Planet Network members.
Sharing information such as budgets and costs on Blue Planet Network's technology platform.
Updating status of projects via Blue Planet Network’s monitoring services so everyone can learn.

This transparency and willingness to critically analyze their work increases their effectiveness and helps everyone learn with them.

Pure Water for the World has built 200 latrines in Trojes to date and has helped more than 120,000 people in Honduras and El Salvador. But we can't stop there. There are 198 villages in Trojes, yet Pure Water for the World has only reached 36 so far.
