Bangladesh is a major agricultural country with vast expanses of farmland. However, large shade trees are not typically planted, as their shade reduces crop yields, particularly for crops like paddy and vegetables. Unfortunately, many farmers have lost their lives due to sudden rain and lightning while working in these open fields. Additionally, there are large, empty grazing areas in Bangladesh's riverine regions where lightning strikes have caused numerous fatalities.
To address this issue, we have launched the "Lightning Safe Life Project with Trees," in which we plant tall, slender trees such as palm, betel nut, and date palm to protect people from lightning. We prioritize planting palm trees in fallow farmlands and along roads in the riverine areas (bills). This initiative not only helps save lives but also utilizes underutilized land.
So far, we have planted more than 50 trees along both sides of a road in a riverine area, and the project is ongoing. With additional support, we plan to expand by planting trees at the corners of farmlands, and this process is already underway.
