Bangladesh, being an agriculture-based country, has vast farmlands where large shade trees are generally avoided in order to protect crop productivity. As a result, extensive agricultural fields and riverine grazing areas remain exposed, leaving farmers and rural communities highly vulnerable to lightning strikes, particularly during sudden thunderstorms and seasonal rainfalls. Every year, many lives are tragically lost due to lightning-related incidents, making it a serious rural safety concern.
The project titled “Safe Life From The Thunderstorms With Plants” has been designed to mitigate these risks through an environmentally sustainable and community-based approach. The initiative promotes the plantation of tall and slender trees such as palm, betel nut, and palmyra trees, which naturally function as lightning conductors. These trees help reduce lightning-related fatalities without negatively affecting agricultural productivity or land usability.
The project primarily focuses on open agricultural lands and grazing areas to ensure both community safety and the continued use of farmland for cultivation and livestock activities.
As part of this initiative, 55 palm trees have been planted in Khanpur, Gorgori, Bagha, Rajshahi, serving as a pilot demonstration of how nature-based and low-cost interventions can effectively enhance public safety and climate resilience in rural communities.
The project is being implemented mainly in the Lalpur Upazila of Natore District and the Bagha Upazila of Rajshahi District. This initiative not only contributes to protecting human lives from lightning hazards but also supports disaster risk reduction, environmental sustainability, and ecological balance in vulnerable rural areas.
In continuation of this initiative, the organization is proudly submitting the 6th Quarterly Progress Report, highlighting the ongoing implementation progress, community engagement, plantation activities, and the overall impact of the project during the reporting period.
Global Community Organization remains committed to continuing this initiative in collaboration with local communities and development partners to build safer, greener, and more resilient communities in Bangladesh.
