Summary

This project is now completed. Through this project we helped to repair and rebuild the houses of 40 elderly people in Nabha Kustha Ashram leprosy village in West Bengal, many thanks to those who have supported this! These people were sadly neglected by the government, and risked having their houses falling down around them, with houses being open to wild animals and unsafe while sleeping. We helped to give them dignity, safety and comfort for their last years as they had endured enough pain.

Challenge

At the moment, the elderly residents of in Nabha Kustha Ashram leprosy village are living and sleeping in houses that in great need of repair and replacement. Dry bricks are used to prop up the roof in places, or to rebuild a wall that has collapsed, provided dire safety risks. The villagers' houses are to the weather and to any invading animals, including rats that pester them while they are sleeping.

Solution

These people were mostly brought here as young adults, abandoned by their families, who feared the disease. They have lived in isolation with support, neglected by the government, until Prabhat Alloi and friends took up their cause. They now receive friendly visits from friends of Prabhat Alloi, who bring clothing, household gifts and friendship. There is now a doctor's surgery in the village with two nurses. But housing remains a dangerous problem without the funds to repair and rebuild.

Long-Term Impact

Building secure housing for Naba Kusth Ashram will help people who have suffered for many long years to live their days in peace and security, with some degree of comfort. Safe and secure housing will allow the 40 remaining residents of Naba Kuth Ashram to live in peace for their remaining days, being able to sleep at night, knowing they are cared for. It will bring about the end of the nightmare.
