Summary

Vivatma plans to buy its own piece of land to create a Safe Haven for the most vulnerable, non-human members of the community of Tabio in Colombia. Our target group is blind elderly homeless, often demented dogs, exposed to so many dangers. Our existing project, the House for Kids and Cats, will also become reality there.

Challenge

There are currently more than 176 stray dogs in Tabio, 25% of them are the most vulnerable part of the canine population: seniors, blind, suffering from dementia and at risk of starvation, disease, emaciation or accidents. At some stage, they simply disappear from the streets. This project will guarantee and secure a place of our own to continue with our initial project "House for Kids and Cats" and create a safe haven for our special seniors.

Solution

Vivatma will reduce the number of senior stray dogs and semi-feral cats, providing veterinary and behavioral care, the chance to recover within a safe place from surgeries or emotional traumas, and become therapy cats and dogs for kids with special needs, until they are adopted into forever homes. Those seniors suffering from Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD) will eventually be handled with all the love and protection they need and deserve.

Long-Term Impact

The shelter is destined for neglected and underprivileged animals who, in spite of their disabilities, are ideal for interacting with children with special needs, often unable to communicate with humans. Furthermore, they will no longer be a public health menace and may be regarded as a joy to the community. The cats have a high probability to find forever homes and the kids may discover that there are many ways to communicate with living beings.

Additional Documentation

This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
