Providing sanitation facilities in rural schools
By Swathi Ram | Project Member
Facilties for sanitation and hygiene in schools can go a long way in creating improved learning environments, thereby facilitating increased attendance and retention of students. This is especially true among girl students, especially in higher classes, since their special needs including privacy are catered to. Children also act as driving forces in spreading these best practices into their homes and communities. The overall long term impact of improved water and sanitation facilities in schools are thus phenomenal.
In view of the same, our team carried out a survey of 10 schools near Shira in Karnataka in July-Aug 2015, and identified their sanitation needs. A local contractor has been idenitified and plans for construction of toilets in 2 schools have been finalized.

Hindu Seva Pratishthana provided water purification systems to an orphanage in Bangarpete, Karnataka and four government schools in Tumkur district, Karnataka in January 2015.
Considering the lack of clean drinking water in rural areas, the participation and support from Dell employees was commendable. The students of these four schools benefited immensely from this project taken by Dell employees.
The funding of this water purification project was done through Globalgiving with participation from Dell employees.
On Jan 31, about 70 employees of Dell visited four schools in Tumkur and personally oversaw the setting up of water purification systems. They even served mid-day meals to the children and made various efforts to mingle with the children. They interacted, bonded and even played and danced with the children.
Dinesh of Dell, who volunteered for this project, said, "Usually, we find lack of basic clean drinking water in rural areas. Schools in such areas are no exception too. Hence, it was great to see water purifiers getting set up there. Kids were excited to see them. We were more than happy to see some really smiling faces."
