The project has helped provide safe drinking water for over 1500 children from 13 government schools located in rural parts of the state of Karnataka.
The water purifier installations have so far been completed in the Tumkur Disctrict. Another 7 water purifiers are planned to be installed through this project in needy parts of Gulbarga Taluk.
In the initial stage the water purifier vendor had been asked to conduct tests on the contamination level in the water for each of the schools (picture has been attached of a test on flouride content in the water before the installation of the purifiers). The right solutions were then designed after taking into consideration factors such as avalilability of electricity and flowing water at the school premise. To enable more number of children to access the drinking water we have provided each purifier with a storage tank with enough capacity to cater to the strength of that particular school. While deciding the location for the purifier Other factors such as safety against theft and natural elements were also considered while deciding the location for the purifiers. School authorities were always consulted at all stages of the project and their happiness and gratitide at the implimentation of this project gave us even more energy to execute the project. There is a plan to conduct a short training session for all the teachers at a central location to share information about the functionality and maintenance of the water purifiers. We have also signed up a three year maintenance contract with the vendor of the water purifier to ensure smooth running of the purifiers.
The first set of purifiers were installed on 14th November (Childrens Day) in three schools. Volunteers visited the schools for the inaugration and spent time with the children. The event also got some coverage from the local newspaper. The list of schools (with contact info of the school headmaster) where the water purifiers have already been installed has been attached for your reference.
