Unsafe Births Condition Increase Maternal Deaths

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for your generous support of the Safe Birth Kits for 80 TBAs to End Maternal Deaths project. We sincerely appreciate every donor who has contributed toward making childbirth safer for mothers living in rural communities where access to formal healthcare remains limited.

We are pleased to share that, through the donations received so far and additional support from our organization, some of the items needed for the Safe Birth Kits have already been procured and are being prepared for distribution. This is an encouraging step forward and brings us closer to reaching Traditional Birth Attendants who serve women in remote villages.

Despite this progress, the available funds are not yet sufficient to fully carry out the project as planned. Additional support is needed to complete procurement, package the remaining kits, conduct distribution activities, and provide the planned guidance on proper use of the materials.

In many rural communities, childbirth continues to take place in settings where sterile supplies are unavailable. Traditional Birth Attendants often rely on limited resources while assisting mothers during delivery. The absence of clean gloves, sterile cutting instruments, antiseptics, and other basic supplies increases the risk of infection, severe complications, and maternal deaths that could otherwise be prevented.

The Safe Birth Kits are designed to provide practical tools that can make deliveries cleaner and safer for both mothers and newborns. Equipping TBAs with these essential materials can help reduce common childbirth-related infections and improve delivery conditions in areas where health facilities are difficult to access.

We are grateful for the support that has allowed us to begin purchasing some of the required items. With further assistance, we will be able to complete the remaining components and move forward with full implementation.

In our next report, we hope to share photographs of the kits, distribution activities, and updates from the communities that will benefit from this project.

Thank you for helping protect mothers and newborns during one of the most important moments of life.

Warm regards,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
