As the world urbanizes and the impacts of climate change and conflicts displace families from their homes, cities can't keep pace with the housing needs of growing populations. Slums are expanding, where families are experiencing negative impacts to their health, education, and well-being. That's why, through our Home Equals global campaign, Habitat for Humanity is working to help 15 million people in slums gain access to safe and healthy housing.
More than 1.1 billion people around the world live in slums and informal settlements, and that figure continues to rise. Their homes don't have services such as clean water and electricity. They often lack land and property rights, fearing eviction, and are most vulnerable to climate-related threats because their homes are made of low-quality materials and located in hazardous areas. By 2030, it is projected 3 billion people will be in of need safe and affordable housing if action is not taken.
Adequate housing is a catalyst for well-being and sustainability. The Home Equals global campaign is addressing systemic barriers in over 40 countries that prevent millions of people living in slums from accessing safe and healthy housing. By helping improve living conditions through scaled initiatives, we can tackle poverty, improve health and education, promote gender equity, and support economic growth for everyone. Because home equals health, safety and security.
To effectively catalyze change and impact more people than we could by only building one house at a time, Habitat for Humanity promotes housing-related laws and systems that expand access to safe and healthy housing for all. Join us as we work alongside communities and governments around the world to transform the lives of 15 million people in slums by disrupting the cycle of inadequate housing.
