By Chukwudi | Building ResilientCommunities Through Agroforestry
Recently, the Rural Watch Africa Initiative (RUWAI) community engagement team visited Kwali Area Council, precisely Ija community, for a verification and community education exercise as part of the second phase of our sustainable livelihoods and agroforestry program. The exercise witnessed the participation of over 100 community members, including women, youth, and local farmers.
One of the major highlights of the engagement is the ongoing formation and registration of a new farmers’ cooperative society with the Federal Government of Nigeria, sponsored by RUWAI. The cooperative will strengthen access to training, improve collaboration among farmers, enhance opportunities for financial inclusion, and create a platform for sustainable agricultural development and shared prosperity within the community.
RUWAI is also actively mobilizing women and men groups ahead of the forthcoming annual community tree planting campaign, where over 5,000 additional economic and environmentally beneficial trees , including shea butter, locust bean, moringa, and mango, will be planted in the community to promote agroforestry, restore degraded landscapes, strengthen food systems, and improve climate resilience.
This initiative continues to inspire hope and local ownership of environmental sustainability efforts in rural communities. We are sincerely grateful for your continued support, encouragement, and belief in our mission.
As we prepare for this year’s planting season, we humbly appeal for your continued monthly or one-time support to help us cover essential logistics such as transporting seedlings from the nursery to planting sites, field transportation, and supporting volunteers who will assist during the planting activities.
Together, we are not only planting trees , we are restoring livelihoods, strengthening communities, and nurturing a more sustainable future for generations to come.
