Project suspension

By Abdirashid Ali | Executive Director

Dear our wonderful donors,

We hope you and your family members are safe.

As you know, COVID-19 Pandemic have caused massive disruptions across the world.

Kenya our country of operation has not been spared. All schools are closed leaving millions of children staying at home.

In fact, Mandera County is one of the most affected counties in Kenya. There is a curfew in place for almost three months now and some counties including Mandera there is a severe restriction. Mandera has been isolated from the rest of the country with no one allowed to enter or leave the county. There are no buses or flights to the county. These restrictions and school closure have forced us to suspend our intervention lessons until schools resume.

The pupils we support come from vulnerable households and before school closure many of them rely on the school feeding programme for their daily meals. Unfortunately with schools closed and no proper government social protection in place, many children are going hungry. There is a danger many might not resume school once the lockdown is lifted. Many girls are at the risk of FGM and early marriages as a coping mechanism for vulnerable families. The situation is extremely serious and we appeal to you for support so that we can give these little angels something to eat while they at home.

We hope and pray that the pandemic comes to an end soon so that the children can resume their studies.

We are extremely worried that the future of many children in our county appears uncertain. This is a county already suffering from the dismal performance of education due to teacher shortages occasioned by insecurity challenges which have forced many non-local teachers to evacuate the region.  With the government not planning to reopen schools anytime soon, we fear many children will lose soo much of the little they have learnt in the previous terms and also go hungry.

We thank you for your previous support and request you to help us feed them at home.

Thank you.
