Calcutta Rescue is an NGO that works to make life better for people living in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata, India. They provide free medical care for poor people, free education for their children, and skills training to help them to become self-reliant. With some friends, we are running the marathon and the semi-marathon in Amsterdam in October 2023 and thought it would be a good idea to raise some money for CR!
I have been volunteering 6 months for Calcutta Rescue as a nurse and my fiance as an economist. I have been working in two clinics in the street 3x/week to do prevention and therapeutic education, and twice a week at school to do the screening to the children. My fiance has been working in the office helping to create the website, helping with fundraising and accounting. We both loved this experience and want to support this amazing NGO.
The project we are keen to support is helping to build houses in slums. Many families are not lucky enough to live within solid walls and have to endure the monsoon and constant flooding in their homes. CR has already built 47 houses and their plan is to build 60! The new one-room houses are built of brick, with solid tin roofs, sliding windows and cement floors. They provide much-needed security, comfort and protection from the harsh weather.
They still need funds to be able to offer other families the same security. One house costs 1000 CHF.
