The first half of 2019 has brought so many accomplishments! As a donor towards the construction of our school, you have facilitated our mission to empower Uganda’s most vulnerable populations through educational and economic opportunities that lead to self-sustaining communities. Because of you, 109 students are receiving holistic care at our school, Rukundo Preparatory.
The Deputy RDC (Resident District Commissioner) reported that he has never seen any school in Kabale with standards like ours, a compliment of the highest honor! We are also excited to report that we were recently able to purchase another small piece of land where the children will be able to have more room to play - especially soccer, their favorite sport!
We now employ 23 Ugandan staff members who support over 500 children and families directly, and countless indirect, beneficiaries. It's truly because of you. We can never say THANK YOU enough.
In addition, so far this year:
We have accomplished so much in the last few years. 2018 was especially exciting as we opened our first primary (elementary school) classrooms. Our goal has always been to expand our school and facilities by 1-2 classrooms each year, and 2019 is no exception.
We have a slab poured that needs covered before it gets damaged by the elements, and this is an urgent need. We also have additional classrooms to add each year to expand our educational opportunities to match our growing student body. We also need to build a dining hall, permanent kitchen, dormitories, and a gate house.
Your support is more important than ever as we continue to provide a world-class education and community-based programs to the children of Kyanamira. While we can take a moment to be proud of what is already done, there is still so much work to do. Thank you for being partners with us. Rukundo International's success is because of you and your generosity.
Our classrooms for grades P1 and P2 were completed in January of this year. Our P1 (first grade) class began their instruction in their room last month, and they are so excited to have such a beautiful room for their use.
The P2 classroom is currently being used as a lunchroom for the students, which is a huge improvement over the food tent that was used last year, which would sometimes leak during heavy rains or become unstable during wind.
These new rooms have allowed us to expand our school at the rate we envisioned, and we can happily look forward to the next round of construction for our P3 and P4 classrooms, as well aa construction on an official lunch room.
Some of our costs exceeded our initial plan, and we have more classrooms to build in 2019 and 2020. Your generous support of our school and community center in Kyanamira, Uganda is making a huge impact. We appreciate every donation we have received more than words can express. Your future generosity will help us continue to partner with the local community and provide education and community services for at-risk children. Thank you!
Construction began on our two new classrooms in September thanks to generous donors and our partnership with Global Giving. It was our goal to begin construction on two new classrooms to serve the first and second grades in autumn 2018, and have them completed before the new school year commences this winter (February 2019). We are happy to report that construction is nearing completion, and right on time, as we just graduated 11 students who will be moving up after the school break!
We are still fundraising to complete finishes, such as the plaster work inside, as well and door and window sills. When the internal plaster work is completed, we will finish the paint and décor for these new classrooms to make them bright and engaging for younger learners. External projects that are still in progress include the rain water channel to divert flooding, and the sewage and waste water systems, but most are over 80% completed.
Our teachers, support staff, and students are thrilled to see Rukundo Preparatory school expand. This flagship programs serves the entire community through weekly Kids’ Sundays and a mushroom growing co-operative house on the school’s land. We are thankful for how far we have come and optimistic about growing our programs and expanding out reach in 2019 and beyond!
