Goma’s dependence on traditional charcoal continues to put pressure on surrounding forests and expose families to harmful indoor air pollution. For many households, charcoal is essential for cooking, yet its rising cost places an additional burden on families already struggling to meet their basic needs. Through the Save Goma’s Forests with Eco-Charcoal project, we aim to turn biodegradable waste into affordable, cleaner fuel, helping protect forests, improve living conditions and create employment opportunities for local young people.
The project is currently in its preparation and resource mobilization phase. We are identifying qualified trainers and prospective learners who will participate in the upcoming activities. Our next steps include strengthening production capacity by acquiring industrial grinding equipment and carbonization kilns, training local producers and expanding the production of eco-charcoal briquettes. Although implementation has not yet started, we are laying the groundwork for a practical, community-based solution that can reduce waste, limit dependence on wood charcoal and provide families with a more sustainable energy alternative.
Our fundraising target is $14,000, and we have not yet received any donations toward this goal. With the support of GlobalGiving, we are working to increase the project’s visibility, reach more international donors and mobilize the resources needed to begin implementation. Once operational, the project aims to make sustainable fuel accessible to 5,000 households, create opportunities for local youth and contribute to the protection of Goma’s surrounding forests. These are our intended results, and we will share progress as activities move forward.
We sincerely thank GlobalGiving for its partnership and for helping us bring this initiative to a wider audience. We also thank every supporter who takes the time to learn about our mission and share our appeal. We invite individual donors, foundations and partners around the world to support this initiative. Every contribution, whatever its size, can help us move closer to launching production, training local people and building a cleaner, greener future for Goma. Together, we can transform waste into opportunity, protect our forests and help families access a more sustainable source of energy.
