EmpowerAbility Balochistan: Restoring Mobility & Inclusion

Implemented by: Balochistan Rural Development Program (BRDP)

Project Lead: Mehmood Rind Baloch, Program Manager
Fundraising Platform: GlobalGiving
Overall Fundraising Goal: USD 31,001
Funds Raised to Date: USD 1,052

Introduction and Context

In many districts of Balochistan, persons living with disabilities continue to face significant social and economic exclusion due to limited access to mobility support services and assistive devices. Geographic isolation, poverty, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure further deepen the challenges faced by individuals with physical impairments, especially in rural and underserved communities.

To address these urgent humanitarian and social inclusion concerns, BRDP launched the EmpowerAbility Balochistan: Restoring Mobility & Inclusion initiative. The project focuses on enhancing the quality of life of persons with disabilities through the distribution of wheelchairs and tricycles, while simultaneously promoting dignity, accessibility, and equal participation in society.

The initiative reflects BRDP’s long-standing commitment to community-based development, human rights, and inclusive humanitarian action across Balochistan.

Project Objectives

The project has been designed with the following key objectives:

  • To provide mobility assistance to vulnerable persons with disabilities through wheelchairs and tricycles
  • To improve access to education, healthcare facilities, livelihoods, and community participation
  • To reduce the physical and emotional burden on caregivers and families
  • To strengthen awareness regarding disability rights and inclusion at the community level
  • To encourage social participation and self-confidence among beneficiaries

Financial Progress

Through online fundraising efforts and the generous support of individual donors, the project has successfully raised USD 1,052 to date through the GlobalGiving platform.

Although the amount remains below the overall fundraising target, BRDP has ensured the effective and transparent utilization of available resources to maximize direct community impact.

Major Achievements and Outputs

Despite financial and logistical limitations, the project has achieved important milestones during the reporting period.

Assistive Devices Distributed

The project successfully provided:

  • 10 Wheelchairs
  • 5 Tricycles

These mobility aids were distributed among highly vulnerable individuals identified through community consultations and field assessments.

Beneficiary-Level Impact

The distributed mobility support has resulted in several positive outcomes, including:

  • Improved independent movement and daily functioning
  • Increased participation in educational and social activities
  • Enhanced psychological well-being and self-esteem
  • Greater ability to access healthcare and livelihood opportunities

Families of beneficiaries also reported reduced caregiving burdens and improved household mobility support.

Community Awareness

The distribution activities helped generate awareness regarding:

  • The rights and dignity of persons with disabilities
  • The importance of accessibility and inclusion
  • Community responsibility toward marginalized individuals

The initiative encouraged local communities to engage more actively in supporting disability inclusion efforts.

Transparency and Accountability

BRDP maintained a transparent implementation and documentation process by:

  • Recording beneficiary details
  • Collecting photographs and impact stories
  • Maintaining financial accountability records
  • Sharing updates with supporters and donors through online platforms

Implementation Methodology

The project adopted a participatory and community-centered implementation approach. Beneficiaries were identified through coordination with local elders, volunteers, families, and community representatives to ensure fairness and transparency.

Priority consideration was given to:

  • Individuals with severe physical mobility limitations
  • Economically disadvantaged households
  • Persons without access to existing mobility support services
  • Individuals residing in remote and underserved areas

BRDP teams coordinated procurement, transportation, and direct distribution while ensuring dignity and respect throughout the process.

Operational Challenges

During implementation, the project encountered several operational constraints:

Funding Limitations

The growing number of requests for support significantly exceeds available financial resources, limiting the scale of current outreach activities.

Geographic and Logistical Difficulties

Many target communities are located in remote and mountainous areas of Balochistan, increasing transportation costs and operational complexities.

Limited Disability Services

A lack of rehabilitation centers, assistive device suppliers, and disability-focused support systems in rural districts remains a major challenge.

Social Barriers

In certain communities, disability-related stigma and low awareness continue to affect inclusion and support mechanisms for persons with disabilities.

Future Strategy and Expansion Plan

To strengthen and expand the initiative, BRDP plans to undertake the following actions:

  • Increase digital fundraising and donor outreach efforts through GlobalGiving
  • Develop partnerships with humanitarian agencies, philanthropists, and private sector contributors
  • Expand mobility support services to additional districts across Balochistan
  • Share regular progress updates, beneficiary stories, and financial transparency reports
  • Advocate for stronger governmental and institutional support for disability inclusion policies
  • Explore additional rehabilitation and livelihood support opportunities for beneficiaries

Conclusion

The EmpowerAbility Balochistan: Restoring Mobility & Inclusion initiative demonstrates how targeted humanitarian support can create meaningful and lasting change in the lives of persons with disabilities. Even with limited financial resources, the project has successfully restored mobility, confidence, and hope for vulnerable individuals who previously faced severe movement restrictions and social exclusion.

The impact achieved so far reflects the importance of compassionate community-driven action and highlights the urgent need for continued support and investment in disability inclusion across Balochistan.

BRDP remains fully committed to expanding this initiative and ensuring that persons with disabilities are empowered to live with dignity, independence, and equal opportunity.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all donors, supporters, and well-wishers whose contributions have made this initiative possible and invite continued collaboration to expand its reach and impact.
