Partnering for Water Safety Education in Schools

By Kaitlin Krause | Founder - Executive Director

After a successful season and after finishing up at The Rockaway Hotel with the young men from St John’s Residence in September, Rising Tide Effect embarked on an exciting journey in October, partnering with the Chelsea Piers Foundation. This collaboration has brought water safety education to the forefront for 120 third graders, transforming their school day with vital swim lessons and aquatic knowledge right in their neighborhood.

Just a three-minute walk away, Chelsea Piers Field House has opened its doors twice a week to these eager students from PS9, a Title I elementary school. There, the Rising Tide team, alongside Chelsea Piers staff, dives into lessons that go beyond swimming to include crucial water safety skills in a state-of-the-art facility. This venture not only provides a fun and educational break for the students but also strengthens community ties and underscores the importance of learning lifesaving skills from a young age.

This initiative, powered by the generous support of the Chelsea Piers Foundation alongside the engagement of the Sarah Smith Garnet School PS9, stands as a powerful example of how community partnerships can enhance educational opportunities during the school day and protect the futures of our children. Together, we are doing more than just teaching swimming; we are cultivating a safer, more aware generation, as evidenced by the enthusiastic participation and feedback from our participants.

PS9 Student Testimonials:

Thank you so much for teaching me how to swim. It was really fun and I really enjoyed it! I hope that I can come back soon. Thank you for making swimming fun with games! I am very grateful that rising tide made it so we can do three things in one day! I also really enjoyed swimming down to get sink toys and other games. Thank you a lot. Our time at swimming I will never forget!

From Faith

Thank you so much for helping me how to be safe in the pool. I learned many things like treading water and diving under water. But everything you guys teach me is really fun. Every time we have fun I'm always happy. You always teach me helpful things like do not go to a beach at night and start swimming because the sharks could come or never ever fight a rip current. I love swim.

Thank you very much.
