Building Resilience: Year Round Community Programs

By Dr. Felisha Mcbride | Executive Director

Back to Basics
Back to Basics

This quarter, the Grand Bahama Resilience Center continued creating opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and strengthen their resilience.

Before closing our regular programs for the summer, children, adults, and seniors continued participating in a range of educational, wellness, recreational, and support activities. These included:

  • Knitting and crocheting

  • Adult Games Club

  • Ballroom dancing

  • Adult crafts

  • Man 2 Man support group

  • Sister Circle

  • Chess Club

  • Reading support

  • Etiquette classes

  • Basic sewing for children

  • Art workshops

  • Nanna Sheppard’s Bedtime Stories

These programs offer much more than recreation. They reduce isolation, encourage social connection, support creativity, develop practical skills, and provide healthy ways for participants to manage stress. They also allow our team to build trusted relationships with individuals and families who may benefit from counseling or other specialized services.

When our regular programs closed for the summer break, we transitioned to Camp Discovery and Back to Basics for children and young people. These summer programs provided safe, structured, and welcoming spaces where participants could remain engaged, develop skills, build confidence, and form positive relationships.

Camp Discovery combined learning, creativity, recreation, and social interaction to support children’s overall well-being. Back to Basics helped participants strengthen foundational skills and prepare for the upcoming school year. Both programs reflected our belief that resilience is developed not only through counseling, but also through supportive relationships, meaningful activities, and opportunities to experience success.

By offering programs for all ages, the Center remains a welcoming community space where children can learn, adults can develop and share skills, seniors can remain active and socially connected, and families can access additional support when needed.

The continued participation of community members demonstrates the importance of accessible spaces where people can gather, learn, heal, and grow together. This integrated approach strengthens the community’s ability to cope with current challenges and prepare for future adversity.

We are grateful to our donors, volunteers, facilitators, families, and community partners who make these programs possible. Your support enables us to provide consistent educational, wellness, therapeutic, and social opportunities throughout Grand Bahama.

Together, we are creating a stronger, healthier, and more connected community, one person and one program at a time.
