The community's ability to rise above adversity and rebuild, rests on its capacity to cope with the crisis. The mission of the Bahamas Resilience Center is to promote healthy adaptation and growth in the face of change, challenges, and stress, through the provision of education, wellness, therapeutic services, and opportunities for connection to individuals and the community as a whole.
In a community incapacitated and struggling to recover from successive years of devasting hurricanes, including the most recent category five Hurricane Dorian in 2019, are obvious negative impacts that were further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco suffered great losses of lives in addition to personal property, infrastructure, businesses, and job security. These multiple stressors have left the community struggling to cope.
The Bahamas Resilience Center provides that strong scaffolding of support to the already strained social and community systems. This is done through the provision of educational and wellness activities, afterschool programs, programs for seniors, training seminars, and individual and group counseling services.
The center provides programs for all ages. Our welcoming space allows individuals to gather and connect with others as they engage in skills-building activities & collectively heal. Our programs and support groups have created platforms from which beneficiaries are learning skills for personal development and coping skills to navigate life's challenges and future shocks. The programs also serve as a gateway for families to access more specialized mental health care where there is a need.
