On June 20, 2018, the Rio Grande Valley (a region with an average rate of poverty hovering at 36% in deep south Texas) experienced a historic rain event that cause damaging flooding in pockets of low-income communities. The Food Bank RGV coordinated with State, County and local authorities to begin distributing clean water, food, fresh produce and cleaning supplies to impacted communities the very next day.
Because of the generosity and help from donors like you, local retailers and volunteer organizations, the Food Bank RGV was able to distribute nearly 1 million pounds of water, food, and cleaning supplies to nearly 40,000 survivors in: Mercedes, Weslaco, Mission and surrounding areas. Thousands of homes were damaged by the flooding and the Food Bank RGV coordinated "muck & gut" operations with national volunteer organizations.
The waters have receeded but the memories and affects of the flooding are still felt by our hardest hit residents. Although thousands of homes and families have been assisted, many more still need monthly food assistance as they struggle to make ends meet.
Your help is vital for us to stay ahead of any potential storms and to ensure we are able to continue to feed 64,000 people on a weekly basis.
