Thank you so much for your contribution to Village Health Project! After months of discussion among community members in Village Health Project-Uganda (VHP-U), our partner community-based organization in Lweza, we are ready for construction.
Since October, members of VHP-U have been saving 2,000 Ugandan shillings ($0.50 USD) each at every weekly meeting that is pooled together. The goal is to construct 8,000 liter water tanks for 14 families initially who have agreed to the terms and conditions decided upon by VHP-U and the community. The saving scheme will continue until famillies have contributed 30% of the cost of all the tanks. Leaders of VHP-U were able to source materials and determine that it will be more cost-effective to build two tanks at a time, rather than one by one. Recipients will be randomly selected to receive the tanks, but they must have already built gutters on their roofs, in order to increase ownership of the project. Your donation will cover the other 70%! This project would not be possible without your generosity.
The first tank will be constructed this week in tandem with the local government in Lweza and Paul Kimera, from Appropriate Technology Centre, the research arm of the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Envrionment. Paul will assist in teaching members of the community how to construct these tanks, thus reducing the cost for future construction and employing youth within the community.
