A Library That Helps Children Thrive: The Dulce Nombre de María Community Library, Copán, Honduras

Community libraries give children more than access to books. They offer a place to ask questions, listen to stories, spend time with other children, and discover that learning can be enjoyable. For many families, these spaces provide a safe and welcoming environment where children can develop reading habits, strengthen their communication skills, and grow in confidence.

The Dulce Nombre de María Community Library, part of the Riecken Community Libraries Network in Honduras, is one such place. Its regular activities, including Story Hour, invite children to read, imagine, and participate. The library is a consistent presence in the community—somewhere children can return to as they grow, find books that interest them, and connect with their peers.

Marco Alejandro’s story is a meaningful example. He began visiting the library when he was very young. In the beginning, he came to play and explore. Over time, however, the library became a place where he developed an interest in stories, books, and learning. Now eight years old, Marco still attends regularly and takes part in Story Hour and other library activities. He enjoys reading, spending time with other children, and being involved in the life of the library.

Marco’s experience shows the value of having a community space that supports children over time. The library has been present during important years of his childhood, encouraging his curiosity and helping him feel comfortable participating in a group setting. For Marco, it is not simply a room filled with books; it is a familiar place where he has learned, made connections, and developed a growing interest in reading.
