Child Rescue Kenya: "These are our children"

By Joan Townsend | US Country Director

Washing at the Street Smart program
Washing at the Street Smart program

In Kenya, Retrak partners with Kitale-based Child Rescue Kenya (CRK). CRK works with 5,000 beneficiaries a year, the vast majority of them children. Retrak supports CRK's "Street Smart" program, which reaches out to children living on the streets of Kitale and offers them a safe refuge and an opportunity to return to a family.

CRK describes their program: "The primary function of the program is to ensure children on the streets access the same rights afforded other children. Towards this aim we provide access to healthcare, remedial education, food, washing facilities, sports, games, justice and love.

"Restoring a child's dignity and recovering their childhood is key to enabling them to make choices that can transform their lives. Rehabilitation is a process that takes time and dedication; it is not just a case of taking the child off the street, but also taking the street out of the child. This can take years. Whether they choose to remain on the streets, return home or enter our Rescue Center, these are our children; we facilitate their choices and are there for them when and where needed."

On behalf of our partners working on the ground in Kenya, thank you for your support which makes the Street Smart program possible. I hope you'll consider making a donation on June 12th for GlobalGiving's Partner Bonus Day, when your donation will go even further to help children in Kitale.
