Dear Reteti GlobalGiving Community,
Thank you for standing with us – for helping elephant orphans find safety at Reteti, and for supporting the community that makes their care possible.
This August, we marked Reteti’s 10th anniversary on World Elephant Day with a special livestream from the sanctuary. Co-founder Katie Rowe and keepers Dorothy Lowakutuk and Naomi Lechongoro took viewers behind the scenes for an insightful Q&A – followed by the magic of watching an elephant feeding unfold in real time. If you missed this special experience, you can still catch the recording here.
As the current weaning herd continues to grow in independence, spending longer hours feeding on their own as they prepare for their eventual return to the wild, work continues in earnest on Reteti’s second site near the sacred Mount Ololokwe. It will mark another significant milestone for the sanctuary, enabling us to welcome more orphans and significantly expand our capacity for conservation and wildlife care in the coming decade.
During the past quarter, the Milk to Market Program paid +1,250 Samburu women KSh 11 million (more than USD 85,000) for the milk that feeds the orphans in Reteti’s care. A recent survey also found that over 94% of Namunyak households rely on milk sales as their main source of income – funding school fees, healthcare and food for their families.
TSF’s Nomadic Schools are seeing strong gains in reading and maths, while the addition of practical-life, music and other classroom materials is significantly strengthening Montessori learning. Other highlights include four teachers pursuing international teaching qualifications, while parent engagement is improving attendance and hygiene. With our fifth school set to open soon, eleven learners at Ntaparani School are also about to progress to the next grade.
The Mobile Healthcare team treated more than 500 children and 91 mothers during the past quarter, while expanding antenatal care across the region with the use of portable ultrasound – which has been critical for identifying underlying conditions and making important diagnoses timeously.
Recently, the Education, Healthcare and Milk to Market Programs all teamed up to bring health, hygiene and education support and insights to Samburu families at a community day in Lbaa – and we hope to make this a regular event to benefit households across Namunyak.
Thank you for helping us build a future where elephants and the community that cares for them can thrive side by side.
With gratitude,
The Sarara Foundation & Reteti Elephant Sanctuary Team
