Meet Tadelech One Year After Her Life-Changing Surgery

By Ciara Baumgartner | Fundraising Officer

Tadelech one year post surgery

Tadelech, a dedicated mother of six from Arba Minch, Ethiopia, faced a challenging period in her life a year ago. Pregnant with her youngest child and suffering from Trachoma Trichiasis (TT) - a painful bacterlial eye infection - Tadelech endured intense eye pain and vision loss that made everyday tasks incredibly difficult.

"The pain in my eyes and the pregnancy often left me needing assistance myself," she recalled. With five other children relying on her, this was the hardest time of her life. The pain severely impacted her ability to perform daily labor work, essential for her family's income, and disrupted their farming activities.

A year ago, she traveled 5KM by foot, to receive TT Surgery. The surgery at Doko Masho health center brought almost immediate relief. "Seeing how it made all the tearing and pain stop, I was very determined to do everything the healthcare workers told me," Tadelech said. Aligning her post-surgery follow-ups with her prenatal visits, she faithfully attended every appointment.

Today - a year after her TT Surgery by Orbis trained Health Care Workers- Tadelech, with her youngest child on her back, speaks with gratitude and joy about her recovery. Despite the long journeys and the challenges of pregnancy, her eyes are now completely healed. She has resumed her labor work, supporting her family once again. "Before the pain in my eyes, I used to support my family doing some labor work. Now, I have started to do some things again, and I am very grateful that I heard about Orbis and received the surgery," she shared happily.

Tadelech's story is a testament to resilience and the impact of your support. Thank you to you - our supporters - for making stories like Tadelech's possible. With just €15, an Orbis-trained eye care worker can perform a sight-saving surgery to prevent blindness. Your contribution is invaluable in transforming lives. Thank you for being part of this journey.
